How to use it

  1. Enter data (separate numbers with commas, spaces or new lines) and value to rank.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Percentile rank = (B + 0.5 × E) ÷ n × 100, where B is the count below x, E the count equal to x and n the total count.

Example

Inputs: Value to rank = 75. Result: Percentile rank: 55%; Share strictly below: 50%; Values below: 5.

Limits and caveats

  • Other definitions of percentile rank exist and give slightly different results on small data sets.
  • The share strictly below is shown too, since it is the other common definition.

Questions about this tool

How is percentile rank different from a percentage?

A percentage compares your score with the maximum; a percentile rank compares it with other people. A rank of 80 means you scored above about 80% of them.

Why do equal values count as half?

An equal value is neither below nor above, so its weight is split. This is the definition used in many educational measurement texts.

Does the value have to be in the data?

No. You can rank any number; the tool counts the values below and equal to it.
