Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter encoded text and character set.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Soft line breaks (= at the end of a line) are removed, each =XX becomes the byte with hex value XX, and the bytes are read with the chosen character set.

Example

Inputs: Character set = UTF-8. Result: Decoded text: مرحبا بكم; Bytes: 17.

=D9=85=D8=B1=D8=AD=D8=A8=D8=A7 =D8=A8=D9=83=D9=85
مرحبا بكم

Limits and caveats

  • Encoded header words like =?utf-8?Q?text?= are not handled; this decodes message bodies.
  • Pick the charset named in the message Content-Type header.

Questions about this tool

How do I know the right character set?

Look for charset= in the Content-Type header of the email source; it is usually utf-8 or windows-1256.

Why do I see odd characters instead of Arabic?

The chosen character set does not match the message. Try the other option.

Is trailing whitespace removed?

Yes. RFC 2045 says to drop it because mail transport may add it.
