How to use it
- Enter driving time, break every and break length.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Breaks = ceil(driving time ÷ interval) − 1. Total time = driving time + breaks × break length.
Example
Inputs: Driving time = 7 h, Break every = 2 h, Break length = 15 min. Result: Total time with breaks: 7:45 h:mm; Number of breaks: 3; Total break time: 45 min.
Limits and caveats
- The at least 15 minutes every 2 hours rule comes from the UK Highway Code; rest more if you feel drowsy.
- Fuel and long meal stops are not counted unless you lengthen the break time.
Questions about this tool
Why is there no break at the end?
You have arrived, so only stops between driving legs are counted.
How many breaks on a 10 hour drive?
With a stop every 2 hours that is 4 breaks, so about 11 hours in total.
Should I change the interval for night driving?
Yes. Use a shorter interval at night or in heat, when fatigue sets in sooner.
