SHA-256 hash generator

Computes the 256-bit SHA-256 digest from FIPS 180-4, the hash behind TLS certificates, software signing and download checks.

Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter text or bytes and input type.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

The UTF-8 bytes are padded into 512-bit blocks; each block runs 64 rounds over eight 32-bit registers with the standard K constants, giving 256 bits.

Example

Inputs: Input type = Text (UTF-8). Result: SHA-256 digest (hex): ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad; Input size: 3 bytes; Digest length: 256 bits.

Limits and caveats

  • The digest covers the text exactly as typed: a trailing space or newline changes it completely, and line breaks count as LF.
  • SHA-256 alone is not enough for storing passwords; they need a salt and a slow function such as PBKDF2 or Argon2.

Questions about this tool

How do I verify a downloaded file with SHA-256?

Hash the file locally with a program such as certutil or sha256sum and compare it character by character with the published value. This tool works on typed text and bytes.

Does changing one character change the hash?

Yes, roughly half the output bits flip, so the new digest looks nothing like the old one.

Is my text sent to a server?

No, the whole calculation runs in your browser in JavaScript.
