How it is calculated
Daily cost = (cigarettes per day ÷ cigarettes per pack) × pack price. Yearly = daily × 365. Monthly = yearly ÷ 12. Spent so far = yearly × years smoked.
Example
Inputs: Cigarettes per day = 20, Cigarettes per pack = 20, Pack price = 25, Years smoked (optional) = 5. Result: Yearly cost: 9,125.00; Daily cost: 25.00; Monthly cost: 760.42.
Limits and caveats
- It uses today price; past and future prices may differ.
- Health costs are not included, nor e-cigarettes, which are sold differently.
Questions about this tool
Does it count days I do not smoke?
No, it assumes smoking every day of the year. If you smoke less on some days, enter your daily average.
Why is the so-far figure approximate?
It multiplies the yearly cost at today price by the years, while prices were usually lower in the past.
Where can I get help to quit?
Ask your doctor or your health ministry about quit-smoking clinics; many offer the service free.
