How to use it
- Enter direction and amount (mg for sodium, g for salt).
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Salt (g) = sodium (mg) × 2.5 ÷ 1000. Sodium (mg) = salt (g) × 1000 ÷ 2.5. WHO limit: under 5 g salt or 2000 mg sodium a day.
Example
Inputs: Direction = Sodium (mg) to salt (g), Amount (mg for sodium, g for salt) = 400. Result: Salt: 1 g; Share of WHO limit: 20%.
Limits and caveats
- 2.5 is the factor used on EU food labels; the exact chemical ratio for sodium chloride is about 2.54.
- Sodium also comes from other ingredients such as baking soda, but labels count it all as salt.
Questions about this tool
How much salt is allowed per day?
WHO advises adults to eat under 5 g of salt a day, about one teaspoon.
Why multiply by 2.5?
Sodium makes up about 40% of table salt by weight, so each gram of sodium is about 2.5 g of salt.
Is sea or Himalayan salt different?
They are almost all sodium chloride and contain close to the same sodium by weight as table salt.
