How to use it
- Enter number of shares, buy price per share, sell price per share, buy commission (amount) and sell commission (amount).
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Cost = shares × buy price + buy commission. Proceeds = shares × sell price - sell commission. Profit = proceeds - cost. Break-even price = (shares × buy price + both commissions) ÷ shares.
Example
Inputs: Number of shares = 100 shares, Buy price per share = 25, Sell price per share = 30, Buy commission (amount) = 5, Sell commission (amount) = 5. Result: Net profit or loss: 490.00; Return on cost: 19.56%; Total purchase cost: 2,505.00.
Limits and caveats
- Commissions are entered as fixed amounts; if yours is a percentage, work out the amount first.
- Taxes and any dividends received while holding are not included.
Questions about this tool
What is the break-even price?
It is the selling price that covers the purchase price and both commissions, so you neither gain nor lose. Selling above it is a profit, below it a loss.
How do I enter a percentage commission?
Multiply the trade value by the rate. For example, 0.15% on a 10000 trade is 15.
Does it work for crypto and funds?
Yes, the math is the same for any asset bought at one price and sold at another. Enter the number of units instead of shares.
