How to use it

  1. Enter sex, waist and hip.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Ratio = waist ÷ hip, in the same unit. WHO treats 0.90 or more for men and 0.85 or more for women as substantially increased risk.

Example

Inputs: Sex = Male, Waist = 85 cm, Hip = 95 cm. Result: Waist-to-hip ratio: 0.89; WHO assessment: Below the cut-off; Cut-off for your sex: 0.9.

Limits and caveats

  • Measure the waist midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, and the hips at the widest point.
  • The cut-offs are for adults and do not apply in pregnancy.

Questions about this tool

What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?

Under 0.90 for men and under 0.85 for women, per the WHO.

Should I measure in cm or inches?

Either, as long as both measurements use the same unit; the ratio has no unit.

Why does it matter more than weight?

Belly fat is more closely linked to insulin resistance and heart disease than fat stored elsewhere.
