I deleted the instruction pages from a fillable form and now the fields don't work. What's the fix?

This is expected, not damage to your file. The tool builds a new file from the remaining pages, and interactive fields do not come across as working fields. The fix is to fill the form first, save a flattened copy, then delete the instruction pages from that. If the recipient is the one filling it in, send the whole form untouched.

What actually happened

A fillable form has two parts: the pages you see, and a layer at the level of the whole file that defines the fields and ties them together. The Delete PDF pages tool copies the pages you kept into a new file, but it does not carry that layer. So the boxes may still appear where they were, yet they do not behave as fields: they will not take typing, or your reader will not save what you type.

This is one of the tool's stated limits: bookmarks, interactive form fields and document metadata are not carried into the new file.

The fix depends on one question: who will fill the form in, you or the recipient?

If you are the one filling it

  1. Go back to your original file, which has not changed.
  2. Fill every field in your PDF reader and save.
  3. Make a flattened copy, meaning one where your answers become a fixed part of the page. In many readers you do this by printing to PDF.
  4. Open the flattened copy in Delete PDF pages, delete the instruction pages and download the file.
Worked example

A 6-page supplier registration form: pages 1 and 2 are instructions, fields sit on pages 3 to 6.

After filling and flattening you type 1-2, and the summary reads: Pages to delete: 1-2 (2 of 6). Pages that will remain: 4.

The result is 4 pages with your answers showing as fixed text that will not change.

If the recipient fills it in

Send the complete form as you received it, even if the instructions are long. A trimmed copy from this tool will reach them with fields that do not work, so they will have to print it and write by hand or ask you for the original. If you want to make it easier, mention in your message which pages hold the fields.

Why the tool does not keep the fields

It builds the new file from scratch with only the remaining pages, which is what guarantees nothing of the deleted pages is left hidden inside. Form fields belong to the whole file rather than one page, and some may point at pages you removed. Moving them across correctly means rebuilding the form, which is a job for form editing software, not a page deletion tool.

Common questions

Will the answers I typed before deleting still show?

Do not count on it. They may show in some readers and not in others. Flattening before deleting is the reliable way to keep the answers visible.

Did the tool break my original file?

No. The original is on your device with working fields, and the tool created a separate file whose name ends in pages-removed.
