The money arrived yesterday and I am writing the receipt today; which date goes on it?
Use the day the money arrived. The receipt has a single date, labelled 'Payment date' in the tool, and that is the date that matches your bank statement and the one the receipt is confirming in the first place. If you issue it later, add a line such as 'Issued on 21 Sep' in the notes.
Why the arrival date
The receipt says 'Received from this customer, this amount'. The natural date for that sentence is the day you received it. When you reconcile a month later you will look for a credit on a particular day of your statement; if the receipt carries the day you typed it rather than the day the money landed, you get a pointless mismatch to explain.
The tool itself calls the field 'Payment date' on the form, and it prints in the receipt header as 'Date', next to the receipt number.
How to do it
- Open the Receipt generator. The date is filled in with today by default.
- Change it to the day the money arrived, as shown on your statement or in the wallet history.
- Fill in the amount, method, purpose and both parties.
- If the two days differ, add to the notes: 'This receipt was issued on 21 September'.
- Create the file and check the date in the header of the preview before downloading.
Three cases to watch
- A transfer sent over the weekend that shows in your account two days later: use the day it showed for you, not the day the customer sent it.
- Cash taken on the last day of the month with the receipt written on the first of the next: use the day you took it, since that decides which month the money belongs to in your books.
- A replacement for a lost receipt: keep the original receipt date, with a note giving the reissue date.
The usual date mistakes
The most common one is leaving the default untouched, because the tool pre-fills today. If you batch several receipts at the end of the week for payments on different days, change the date on each. The second is typing a future date to get ahead of things, such as a receipt for next month's installment; that confirms a payment that has not happened.
If the customer needs a date by which an unpaid amount is due, that belongs in the 'Due date' field of the Basic invoice generator, not on a receipt.
Common questions
Can a receipt carry two dates?
It has one date field. A second date, if you need one, goes into the notes as text.
What format does the date print in?
Year, month, day in digits, such as 2026-09-20, as picked in the date field.
