Why does the receipt tool insist on method details when I choose 'Other'?

Because with 'Other' the tool has nothing to print as the method. With cash, bank transfer or card the field is optional since the method is already named. With 'Other', your text in that field is the method name, so it cannot be empty. Type the method itself, such as 'Cheque no. 1045' or 'Payment link'.

What you see on screen

You press 'Create PDF', nothing is created, a message asks you to fix the highlighted fields, and 'Payment method details' now says it is required. That is confusing when the same field was optional a minute ago with 'Cash' selected. What changed is your choice in the method list, not the field.

How each method prints

Seeing the output makes the reason obvious. The tool builds the method line like this:

  • 'Cash' with no details prints: Cash.
  • 'Bank transfer' with details prints: Bank transfer - followed by what you typed, such as the reference.
  • 'Card' with details prints: Card - followed by, say, the last four digits.
  • 'Other' with details prints your text alone, without the word 'Other'.

If an empty field were allowed with 'Other', you would get a receipt saying the payment was made by 'Other', a word that tells the customer, the accountant and you a month from now nothing at all.

What to type

Name the method and add whatever identifies the payment, within 80 characters. Typical things recorded under 'Other':

  1. A cheque: 'Cheque no. 1045, Emirates NBD'. Issue the receipt once the cheque clears, not when you are handed the paper.
  2. A gateway payment link: 'Payment link - order 3310'.
  3. A wallet app: the app name and the transaction number.
  4. A set-off: 'Deducted from customer's existing credit', with the explanation in the notes.

If you were trying to avoid the field

Do not pick 'Other' to dodge anything. If it really was a bank transfer, choose that: the details become optional and nothing is demanded. 'Other' is for what does not fit the three named methods. Once the field is filled, press 'Create PDF' again and read the method line in the preview before downloading.

If the deal is bigger than one receipt, for example several items paid partly by cheque and partly in cash, an invoice from the Basic invoice generator plus one receipt per payment from the Receipt generator reads more clearly than a single receipt trying to say everything.

Common questions

I typed only a space. Why is it still required?

Leading and trailing spaces are trimmed, so a field of spaces counts as empty.

On a bilingual receipt, does my detail text get translated?

No. The labels are bilingual, but text you type prints exactly as written, so write it in the language the customer reads.
