The product title I copied from my supplier is 135 characters long and stuffed with repeated words. How do I shorten it into a good page title?
Keep three things: the product type, the detail that sets it apart (size, origin or model), and your store name at the end. Drop repeated words, generic claims like premium quality and audience lists like men women unisex. Watch the width status as you cut, since the preview shows where the title is likely to be cut, though the engine may still rewrite it.
Why supplier titles are so long
Product titles on wholesale sites and big marketplaces are often written for that marketplace's own search, so sellers cram in every word anyone might type. On your own page, that title becomes a long line in search results, cut before the searcher reaches what matters, and reading like a keyword list rather than a product name.
The example: a supplier's oud oil title
Here is the title as it came from the supplier; in the Search snippet preview it counts 135 characters:
Men Women Unisex Perfume Oud Oil Arabic Attar Long Lasting Fragrance 12ml Gift Box Set Original Cambodian Premium Quality Free Shipping
Its translated Arabic version comes to 104 characters and repeats both the word for perfume and the word for oud twice.
What goes and what stays
- Keep the product type: Oud Oil.
- Keep what really sets it apart: Cambodian, and the 12 ml size.
- Drop audience lists: Men Women Unisex. Someone searching for oud oil does not need to be told it is for everyone.
- Drop generic claims: Original, Premium Quality. They belong in the description, if true and you can back them up.
- Drop what is not about the product: Free Shipping, Gift Box Set. Those are offers that change, and they belong in the description too.
- Drop the repetition: Perfume, Fragrance and Attar all say the same thing again.
The result in English: Cambodian Oud Oil 12 ml | Oud Store, 35 characters. In Arabic: «دهن عود كمبودي 12 مل | متجر العود», 33 characters.
Working it through in the tool
- Paste the supplier title as it is into the title field, add your page URL, and look at the width status: most likely wider.
- Delete one word or group of words at a time and watch the count and width drop.
- Stop when the title is within roughly 580 px and reads like a natural name, not a list.
- Move anything you deleted that is worth saying into the description: gift box, delivery, longevity if true.
- If the supplier wrote the title in all capitals, convert it to normal case with the Text case converter before you start.
What the tool does not promise
A short, clear title does not lift your ranking in itself, the tool does not claim it does, and nothing in it affects ranking. The engine may also rewrite the title if it thinks other text describes the page better. What you gain is a result a searcher understands at a glance. If you also have the supplier's long description and want its word count before trimming it, paste it into the Word and character counter.
Common questions
Should I drop the size from the title?
If size separates your products, say you sell 3, 6 and 12 ml on separate pages, keep it. If all sizes are on one page, mention them in the description.
What about the words people actually search for?
The main term people search for stays in the title once. Repeating it adds no meaning for the searcher.
