Can I split a long manual into chapters automatically using its bookmarks?

Not automatically. The tool splits by the page numbers you type, not by bookmarks. Getting the same result is easy, though: find where each chapter starts, then type something like 1-12, 13-30, 31-44 in “One PDF per range” mode for one file per chapter.

Why there is no bookmark auto-split

Bookmarks, the outline in your PDF reader's sidebar, are missing from many files, and where they exist they are sometimes incomplete or point to sub-headings inside a chapter. Splitting blindly on them could hand you dozens of tiny files before you notice. So the tool works from what you type, and before downloading it shows how many files and pages you will get so you can check.

Bookmarks also do not travel into the outputs, so the file for chapter three will not carry the sidebar outline the original manual had.

Finding where each chapter starts

  • Open the manual in a PDF reader, click each bookmark in the sidebar and note the page number your reader shows in its toolbar. That is the real page position in the file.
  • With no bookmarks, use the contents page, but watch out: the printed number in the contents may not match the file position if there is a cover and front matter before it.
  • For a long manual with no bookmarks, copy its text with PDF text extractor and search for the chapter titles to find the pages quickly.

The steps

  1. Open Split PDF and choose the manual. Say it has 44 pages.
  2. Choose “One PDF per range”.
  3. Type one range per chapter: 1-12, 13-30, 31-44. Each chapter ends on the page before the next one starts.
  4. Check the preview line: a ZIP with 3 files and 44 pages in total, which tells you no page was left out.
  5. Press “Split and download”.
Worked example

manual.pdf, 44 pages, with 1-12, 13-30, 31-44.

Inside manual-split.zip: manual-pages-1-12.pdf with 12 pages, manual-pages-13-30.pdf with 18 pages and manual-pages-31-44.pdf with 14 pages.

Tips for product manuals and staff handbooks

  • Rename each file after its chapter once you unpack the ZIP, such as warranty or installation, because that is what a reader looks for.
  • If every chapter should open with the cover page, type it in each group separated by a space: 1 2-12, 1 13-30.
  • If the preview total is lower than the file's page count, there is a gap between two ranges; if it is higher, a page appears in two files.

Common questions

Can I get the bookmarks back in a chapter file?

Not with this tool. If you need an outline in the chapter file, add it in a PDF editor or export the chapter from the original source document.

Is there a limit on the number of chapters?

No limit on the number of ranges. The tested limit for the file is 100 MB and 500 pages.
