Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter permissions (octal or symbolic).
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Each digit = read 4 + write 2 + execute 1, in the order owner, group, others. An optional leading digit: setuid 4, setgid 2, sticky 1.

Example

Inputs: Permissions (octal or symbolic) = 755. Result: Octal: 755.

Limits and caveats

  • Relative forms like u+x or g-w are not supported, only full permission sets.
  • ACLs and SELinux labels are outside what chmod numbers describe.

Questions about this tool

What does 755 mean?

Owner can read, write and execute (7); group and others can read and execute (5). It is typical for folders and scripts.

Why avoid 777?

It lets every user on the server change or delete the file, which is a security risk.

What is the difference between s and S?

s means setuid or setgid with execute set; S means the bit without execute, usually a misconfiguration.
