How to use it

  1. Enter materials per unit, labour per unit, overhead per unit and markup.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Total cost = materials + labour + overhead. Selling price = total cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100).

Example

Inputs: Materials per unit = 20, Labour per unit = 15, Overhead per unit = 5, Markup = 40 %. Result: Selling price: 56.00; Total unit cost: 40.00; Profit per unit: 16.00.

Limits and caveats

  • Overhead per unit is an estimate based on expected volume; lower sales mean a higher real cost.
  • The method ignores competitor prices and what customers are willing to pay.

Questions about this tool

How do I get overhead per unit?

Divide monthly overheads such as rent and power by the number of units you make or sell in a month.

What markup should I use?

It depends on the trade and competition, so try a few rates and compare the price with the market.

Should my own time count as labour?

Yes. If you do the work yourself, price your time, or the profit will look bigger than it is.
