How it is calculated
Customs value = goods + freight + insurance (CIF), or goods value alone (FOB). Duty = customs value × duty rate. VAT = (customs value + duty) × VAT rate.
Example
Inputs: Goods value = 10,000, Freight = 1,200, Insurance = 100, Customs value basis = CIF: goods, freight and insurance, Duty rate = 5 %. Result: Customs duty: 565.00; Import VAT: 1,779.75; Total due at clearance: 2,344.75.
Limits and caveats
- Default rates are only an example: 5% is the general GCC common tariff rate and 15% is Saudi VAT; many goods have other rates or exemptions.
- Excise tax, anti-dumping duty and customs service fees are not included.
Questions about this tool
How do I find the duty rate for my product?
Look up the HS code of the item in your country's customs tariff; the rate depends on it and on the country of origin.
Why is VAT charged on the duty too?
In the Gulf states and many other countries, the import VAT base is the customs value plus customs duty.
When should I choose FOB?
When the importing country charges duty on the goods value without freight and insurance, as the United States does.
