How to use it

  1. Enter radius or diameter, the value is, height and length unit.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Volume = πr²h, lateral area = 2πrh, total area = 2πrh + 2πr².

Example

Inputs: Radius or diameter = 10, The value is = Radius, Height = 20, Length unit = Centimeter (cm). Result: Volume: 6,283.1853 cm³; Lateral surface area: 1,256.6371 cm²; Total surface area: 1,884.9556 cm².

Limits and caveats

  • Assumes a right cylinder with two equal circular ends; wall thickness is not included.
  • Results are in the cube or square of the unit you chose, so enter every dimension in that same unit.

Questions about this tool

What is the cylinder volume formula?

Volume = π × r² × h. A cylinder with radius 2 and height 5 holds 20π, about 62.83.

How do I get liters?

With dimensions in centimeters every 1000 cm³ is one liter, and the calculator shows liters directly.

Does it handle an oblique cylinder?

The volume is the same if you enter the perpendicular height. The lateral area differs and is not covered here.
