Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter numerator and denominator.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Decimal = numerator ÷ denominator by long division; digits repeat once a remainder comes back

Example

Inputs: Numerator = 1, Denominator = 6. Result: Exact decimal: 0.1(6); Rounded value: 0.1666666667; Percentage: 16.666667%.

Limits and caveats

  • The denominator is limited to 10000 so the repeating block stays displayable.
  • A fraction terminates only when its reduced denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5.

Questions about this tool

What do the brackets in the result mean?

The digits in brackets repeat forever, so 0.1(6) means 0.1666 with the 6 repeating.

Why does 1/8 end but 1/3 repeat?

The denominator 8 has only the factor 2, while 3 is not a factor of 10, so the division never ends.

Is 22/7 equal to pi?

No. 22/7 = 3.(142857) is only an approximation; pi is irrational and never repeats.
