How it is calculated
Cost per order = pick and pack + packaging + shipping + (monthly storage + monthly fixed costs) ÷ monthly orders.
Example
Inputs: Orders per month = 1,000, Pick and pack per order = 4, Packaging per order = 2, Shipping per order = 18, Monthly storage cost = 1,500. Result: Fulfillment cost per order: 26.00; Total monthly cost: 26,000.00; Cost as % of order value: 13%.
Limits and caveats
- It assumes one shipping cost per order, while real rates vary by weight and city.
- Returns and payment fees are not included; they have their own calculators.
Questions about this tool
What counts as monthly fixed costs?
Inventory software, packing staff wages and any monthly warehouse fee that does not change with order count.
Why does the cost fall as orders rise?
Storage and fixed costs are spread across more orders, so each order carries a smaller share.
What share of order value is acceptable?
There is no single figure, but compare it with your gross margin. If it gets close, the order leaves little profit.
