How to use it
- Enter data (separate numbers with commas, spaces or new lines).
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Geometric mean = (product of the values)^(1 ÷ n) = exp(mean of ln x).
Example
Result: Geometric mean: 16; Arithmetic mean for comparison: 23.066667; Count: 3.
Limits and caveats
- Zero and negative values are not allowed. Convert negative returns to factors, so a 5% loss becomes 0.95.
- The geometric mean is always less than or equal to the arithmetic mean.
Questions about this tool
When should I use the geometric mean?
Whenever values compound on each other, such as yearly sales growth, investment returns or price indices.
How do I average annual returns?
Enter each year as a factor (1 + return), then subtract 1 from the result. For 1.10, 0.95 and 1.20 the average is about 7.84% a year.
Does it match Excel GEOMEAN?
Yes, it is the same calculation.
