How to use it

  1. Enter amount, measure, measuring spoons and your own weighed teaspoon in grams (optional).
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

grams = number of spoons × weight per spoon. In the source: 1 tsp = 1.8 g, 1 tbsp = 5.2 g. For metric spoons the weight is multiplied by the volume ratio: 5 ÷ 4.929 for a teaspoon and 15 ÷ 14.787 for a tablespoon, about 1.4% more.

Example

Inputs: Amount = 2, Measure = Teaspoon, Measuring spoons = US spoons (as in the source). Result: Weight in grams: 3.6 g; Grams per teaspoon used: 1.8 g.

Limits and caveats

  • Figures are for a spoon leveled with a knife; a heaped spoon weighs clearly more.
  • Grind, moisture and brand change the weight, so if you weigh your own spoon once, enter it in the optional box.

Questions about this tool

How many grams are in a teaspoon of ground ginger?

1.8 g in a level teaspoon per USDA, and 5.2 g in a tablespoon.

Can I swap fresh ginger for ground at the same weight?

No. Fresh ginger holds a lot of water and tastes different; this tool covers dry ground ginger only and does not work out swaps.

Does it change with metric measuring spoons?

Slightly. The figures are for US spoons (4.93 mL and 14.79 mL); metric spoons of 5 mL and 15 mL hold about 1.4% more, so pick "Metric spoons" to adjust.
