How to use it

  1. Enter tiled area, tile length, tile width, joint depth (tile thickness), joint width and grout density.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Use (kg/m²) = (length + width) ÷ (length × width) × joint depth × joint width × density, sizes in mm and density in kg/L. Total = use × area × (1 + waste ÷ 100).

Example

Inputs: Tiled area = 20 m², Tile length = 600 mm, Tile width = 600 mm, Joint depth (tile thickness) = 8 mm, Joint width = 3 mm. Result: Grout needed (with waste): 2.82 kg; Bags: 1 bags; Use per m²: 0.128 kg/m².

Limits and caveats

  • Density differs by product, epoxy being heavier than cement grout, so use the data sheet figure.
  • Assumes each joint is filled to the full tile depth.

Questions about this tool

How much grout for 1 m² of 600 × 600 tiles?

With 8 mm depth, a 3 mm joint and 1.6 kg/L, only about 0.128 kg, since large tiles have few joints.

Why do small tiles use more grout?

Joint length per square metre grows as tiles get smaller, so 100 × 100 mm mosaic uses several times more.

What joint width is usual?

About 2 to 3 mm for rectified porcelain and 3 to 5 mm for standard ceramic, or as the maker advises.
