How it is calculated
grams = number of spoons × weight per spoon. In the source: 1 tsp = 1 g. The tablespoon figure is derived by volume from the listed one (1 tbsp = 3 tsp, 1 cup = 48 tsp). A single packet is 2 g as USDA lists it. For metric spoons the weight is multiplied by the volume ratio: 5 ÷ 4.929 for a teaspoon and 15 ÷ 14.787 for a tablespoon, about 1.4% more.
Example
Inputs: Amount = 2, Measure = Teaspoon, Measuring spoons = US spoons (as in the source). Result: Weight in grams: 2 g; Grams per teaspoon used: 1 g.
Limits and caveats
- Figures are for a spoon leveled with a knife; a heaped spoon weighs clearly more.
- USDA lists the teaspoon only, so the tablespoon is derived by volume as 3 g. Freeze-dried granules vary with granule size.
Questions about this tool
How many grams are in a teaspoon of instant coffee?
1 g for a level teaspoon of regular powder per USDA, and 2 g for a single packet.
Why does my spoon weigh more than 1 g?
Probably because it is heaped. USDA lists a rounded teaspoon of instant decaf powder at about 1.8 g, so weigh yours and use the optional box.
Does it change with metric measuring spoons?
Slightly. The figures are for US spoons (4.93 mL and 14.79 mL); metric spoons of 5 mL and 15 mL hold about 1.4% more, so pick "Metric spoons" to adjust.
