Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.
How to use it
- Enter matrix (one row per line).
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
For 2 × 2: det = ad - bc. Larger: det(A) = Σ (-1)^(1+j) × a1j × det(M1j), where M1j is the minor left after deleting row 1 and column j.
Example
Result: Determinant: 49; Size: 3 × 3; Invertible?: Yes.
Limits and caveats
- Accepts square matrices from 2 × 2 to 5 × 5.
- Decimal entries can leave tiny floating point differences.
Questions about this tool
How do I find a 2 × 2 determinant?
Multiply the main diagonal and subtract the product of the other diagonal: ad - bc. For [1 2; 3 4] that is 4 - 6 = -2.
What does a zero determinant mean?
The matrix is singular with no inverse, and its rows are linearly dependent, like [1 2; 2 4].
How do I type the matrix?
Put each row on a new line or separate rows with semicolons, and separate values with spaces or commas.
