How to use it
- Enter base length, base width, height and length unit.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Volume = lwh/3, slant on side l: s1 = √(h² + (w/2)²), slant on side w: s2 = √(h² + (l/2)²), lateral = l × s1 + w × s2, total = lateral + lw.
Example
Inputs: Base length = 6, Base width = 6, Height = 4, Length unit = Centimeter (cm). Result: Volume: 48 cm³; Lateral surface area: 60 cm²; Total surface area: 96 cm².
Limits and caveats
- Covers right pyramids with the apex over the center of a rectangular base, not triangular or hexagonal bases.
- Results are in the cube or square of the unit you chose, so enter every dimension in that same unit.
Questions about this tool
What is the pyramid volume formula?
Volume is one third of base area × height. A 6 × 6 base with height 4 gives 48.
What is the slant height?
It is the height of a triangular face, from the midpoint of a base edge up to the apex, used for the face area.
Why are there two slant heights?
On a rectangular base the faces on the length and width sides differ. On a square base they are equal.
