How to use it
- Enter weight, measuring spoons and your own weighed teaspoon in grams (optional).
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
teaspoons = grams ÷ 0.7 g and tablespoons = grams ÷ 2.1 g, from the source: 1 tsp = 0.7 g, 1 tbsp = 2.1 g. The spoon measure is rounded to the nearest 1/4 teaspoon. For metric spoons the weight is multiplied by the volume ratio: 5 ÷ 4.929 for a teaspoon and 15 ÷ 14.787 for a tablespoon, about 1.4% more.
Example
Inputs: Weight = 2 g, Measuring spoons = US spoons (as in the source). Result: Teaspoons: 2.86; Tablespoons: 0.95; As a spoon measure: 2 3/4 tsp.
Limits and caveats
- The spoon measure is rounded to the nearest 1/4 teaspoon; the decimal count is more exact.
- USDA does not say whether it measured threads or powder, and powder fills a spoon more densely than threads.
- Grind, moisture and brand change the weight, so if you weigh your own spoon once, enter it in the optional box.
Questions about this tool
How many teaspoons is 1 g of saffron?
About 1.43 teaspoons using the USDA figure of 0.7 g per teaspoon, roughly one and a half.
Why does a spoon of saffron vary in weight?
Threads leave many gaps in a spoon and their length differs between grades, so a scale is more exact for a costly spice like saffron.
Does it change with metric measuring spoons?
Slightly. The figures are for US spoons (4.93 mL and 14.79 mL); metric spoons of 5 mL and 15 mL hold about 1.4% more, so pick "Metric spoons" to adjust.
