How it is calculated
grams = cups × 144 g per US cup (236.59 mL) for the first type; each type shows its own figure in the source line. For a 250 mL metric cup the weight is 144 × 250 ÷ 236.59 = 152.16 g. A US tablespoon is 1/16 cup and a teaspoon 1/48 cup; metric spoons are 15 mL and 5 mL.
Example
Inputs: Amount = 2, Measure = Tablespoon, Cup standard = US cup (236.6 mL), Sesame type = Whole sesame seeds. Result: Weight in grams: 18 g; Weight in ounces: 0.63 oz; Grams per cup used: 144 g.
Limits and caveats
- Toasting dries the seeds and lowers the cup weight, so pick the type that matches yours.
- Spoon weights are scaled from the cup weight by volume, not from a separate spoon figure.
- USDA figures are rounded to the whole gram per cup, and grain size, variety and moisture make your real weight a little higher or lower.
