How it is calculated

USDA gives 15 g per tablespoon of tahini (roasted kernels), and a US cup holds 16 tablespoons, so 15 × 16 = 240 g per cup. grams = amount × unit volume ÷ cup volume × 240. For a 250 mL metric cup that is 240 × 250 ÷ 236.59 = 253.61 g.

Example

Inputs: Amount = 3, Measure = Tablespoon, Cup standard = US cup (236.6 mL). Result: Weight in grams: 45 g; Weight in ounces: 1.59 oz; Grams per cup used: 240 g.

Limits and caveats

  • The USDA spoon figure is rounded to 15 g, so the 240 g cup could really be about 232 to 248 g.
  • Unstirred tahini is heavier at the bottom and lighter at the top.
  • Tahini from unroasted kernels is listed at 14 g per tablespoon.
