How to use it

  1. Enter edge length and length unit.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Volume = a³ / (6√2), total area = √3 × a², height = a × √(2/3).

Example

Inputs: Edge length = 6, Length unit = Centimeter (cm). Result: Volume: 25.4558 cm³; Total surface area: 62.3538 cm²; Height: 4.899 cm.

Limits and caveats

  • Regular tetrahedra only; it does not apply when the edges differ.
  • Results are in the cube or square of the unit you chose, so enter every dimension in that same unit.

Questions about this tool

What is the regular tetrahedron volume formula?

Volume = a³ / (6√2), about 0.11785 × a³. An edge of 6 gives 18√2, about 25.46.

Is it the same as a triangular pyramid?

It is a special triangular pyramid whose four faces are identical equilateral triangles.

How is the height found?

The height from a vertex to the center of the opposite face is a × √(2/3), about 0.8165 × a.
