How it is calculated
Pension = salary × rate. Tax on (salary − pension) with 2026/27 bands. National Insurance = 8% between 12,570 and 50,270 plus 2% above, on the full salary. Take-home = salary − pension − tax − NI.
Example
Inputs: Annual gross salary = 45,000 GBP, Pension contribution = 5 %. Result: Annual take-home: 34,119.60 GBP; Monthly take-home: 2,843.30 GBP; Income tax: 6,036.00 GBP.
Limits and caveats
- England, Wales and Northern Ireland only; student loans are not included.
- Assumes pension is taken before tax (net pay); salary sacrifice would also cut National Insurance.
Questions about this tool
What is the employee NI rate?
8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, and 2% above that.
Why does pension not cut NI here?
Under a net pay arrangement NI is charged on the full salary.
Is the monthly figure exact?
It is the annual figure ÷ 12; payslips can differ a little because NI is worked out per pay period.
