How to use it

  1. Enter price before tax and price including tax.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Rate = (inclusive price ÷ price before tax − 1) × 100, and tax amount = inclusive price − price before tax.

Example

Inputs: Price before tax = 100, Price including tax = 115. Result: Tax rate: 15%; Tax amount: 15.00; Multiplier: 1.15.

Limits and caveats

  • It assumes the whole difference is a single tax, so added fees or another tax will show a higher rate than the real one.
  • Rounded invoice prices can give a slightly different rate, such as 14.98% instead of 15%.

Questions about this tool

Why does it show 14.99% and not 15%?

Invoice prices are rounded to the nearest cent or halala, and that rounding shifts the rate slightly.

Can I find the rate from the inclusive price alone?

No. You need two figures: the price before and after tax, or the price and the tax amount.

What is the multiplier?

The number you multiply the price before tax by to get the inclusive price, such as 1.15 at 15%.
