How to use it
- Enter gpa scale, previous cumulative gpa, previous hours counted, this semester gpa and this semester hours.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Cumulative GPA = (previous GPA × previous hours + semester GPA × semester hours) ÷ (total hours).
Example
Inputs: GPA scale = Out of 5.0, Previous cumulative GPA = 4.2, Previous hours counted = 60 hours, This semester GPA = 4.6, This semester hours = 15 hours. Result: New cumulative GPA: 4.28 of 5; Total hours: 75; Total points: 321.
Limits and caveats
- When you repeat a course some universities replace the old grade instead of adding it; that case needs a course by course calculation.
- Use only the hours that count toward the GPA, not every registered hour.
Questions about this tool
Why not add the two GPAs and divide by 2?
Each GPA covers a different number of hours. The cumulative GPA is an hours weighted average, so a heavier semester counts for more.
Why does my GPA barely move in later years?
As your completed hours grow, one semester carries less weight, so a single term can shift the cumulative GPA only a little.
Where do I find my counted hours?
Your academic record on the university portal lists them, usually as hours counted or hours earned toward the GPA.
