How it is calculated
grams = amount × unit size in US cups × 198. 1 tbsp = 1/16 cup, 1 tsp = 1/48 cup, metric cup 250 mL = 1.0567 US cups. 1 oz = 28.3495 g.
Example
Inputs: Amount = 0.5, Unit = US cup (236.6 mL). Result: Weight in grams: 99 g; Weight in ounces: 3.49 oz.
Limits and caveats
- The figure is for regular granulated sugar; caster or coarse sugar can weigh a little differently.
- Chart figures are rounded to the gram, and a scale is more exact than any cup.
- Metric cup (250 mL) and spoon values are scaled by volume from the 236.59 mL US cup figure.
Questions about this tool
How many grams is 1/2 cup of white sugar?
Half a US cup is 99 g, because a full cup is 198 g in the chart; a quarter cup is 49.5 g.
Is a cup of sugar 200 g or 198 g?
The King Arthur chart lists 198 g (7 oz). Many recipes round it to 200 g, a difference of about 1%.
Why do cup weights differ between websites?
Charts assume different ways of filling the cup. This tool uses the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart: 1 cup of granulated white sugar = 198 g (7 oz), filled and leveled.
