How to use it

  1. Enter number of people, space per person along the table, table width, one person at each end of the table and clearance from table edge to wall.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Side seats = guests − 2 when both ends are used, or all guests without them. Seats per long side = side seats ÷ 2, rounded up. Table length = seats per long side × space per person. Room length = table length + 2 × clearance, room width = table width + 2 × clearance.

Example

Inputs: Number of people = 6, Space per person along the table = 70 cm, Table width = 90 cm, One person at each end of the table = yes, Clearance from table edge to wall = 90 cm. Result: Table length needed: 140 cm; Seats on the longer side: 2; Minimum room length: 320 cm.

Limits and caveats

  • Rectangular tables only. Round and oval tables are not covered.
  • Space per person and clearance are common design conventions, not a binding standard, so adjust them to your chairs.
  • End seats need a table wide enough for one person, and table legs can reduce the usable seats.

Questions about this tool

How much table space does each person need?

About 60 cm per person is the usual minimum, and 70 to 75 cm is more comfortable, especially with armchairs.

How much space should I leave to the wall?

About 90 cm lets people pull out a chair and walk behind a seated guest. 75 cm is a minimum for light traffic.

Why does it show only the longer side?

The side with more people sets the table length. With an odd number, the other side seats one person fewer.
