How it is calculated
Energy charge = min(usage, tier 1 limit) × tier 1 rate + excess × tier 2 rate. Total = (energy charge + fixed fee) × (1 + VAT).
Example
Inputs: Monthly usage = 1,500 kWh, Tier 1 limit = 6,000 kWh, Tier 1 rate = 0.18 per kWh, Tier 2 rate = 0.3 per kWh, Fixed meter fee = 0. Result: Total bill: 310.50; Energy charge: 270.00; kWh in tier 1: 1,500.
Limits and caveats
- Defaults are the Saudi Electricity Company residential tariff in force since 2018: 0.18 SAR up to 6,000 kWh a month and 0.30 SAR above, plus 15% VAT.
- The meter fee depends on breaker capacity, so copy it from your bill.
- If the billing period is longer or shorter than a month, the effective tier limit may differ.
Questions about this tool
What is the bill for 1,500 kWh in Saudi Arabia?
1,500 × 0.18 = 270 SAR, which becomes 310.50 SAR with 15% VAT before the meter fee.
When does the price per kWh go up?
Under the Saudi residential tariff only the kWh above 6,000 in a month are charged at 0.30 SAR, not the whole usage.
Is VAT charged on the meter fee?
Yes. VAT applies to the energy charge plus the fixed fee.
