How to use it
- Enter leavers in the period, headcount at start, headcount at end and period length in months.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Average headcount = (start + end) ÷ 2. Turnover rate = leavers ÷ average × 100. Annualised = period rate × 12 ÷ months in period.
Example
Inputs: Leavers in the period = 6, Headcount at start = 50, Headcount at end = 54, Period length in months = 12. Result: Turnover rate for the period: 11.54%; Average headcount: 52; Annualised turnover: 11.54%.
Limits and caveats
- A two-point average is an approximation; the mean of monthly headcounts is more precise if you have it.
- It does not separate resignations from dismissals; calculate each separately if needed.
Questions about this tool
What is turnover if 6 leave from an average of 52?
6 ÷ 52 × 100 is about 11.54% for the period.
Should interns and temporary staff count?
Pick one definition and stick to it. Counting permanent staff only is common, so periods compare fairly.
Why do I need the annualised rate?
To compare a quarter or month with a full year. 7.5% in three months is about 30% a year if it continues.
