How to use it

  1. Enter ev consumption, electricity price per kwh, petrol car consumption, fuel price per liter and distance per year.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

EV cost = distance ÷ 100 × consumption (kWh/100 km) × price per kWh. Petrol cost = distance ÷ 100 × consumption (L/100 km) × price per liter. Saving = the difference.

Example

Inputs: EV consumption = 17 kWh/100 km, Electricity price per kWh = 0.18, Petrol car consumption = 8 L/100 km, Fuel price per liter = 2.33, Distance per year = 20,000 km. Result: Yearly saving with the EV: 3,116.00; EV yearly energy cost: 612.00; Petrol yearly fuel cost: 3,728.00.

Limits and caveats

  • The EV figure on the dashboard excludes charging losses; add about 10% for the true bill.
  • Purchase price, servicing and insurance are not included, and prices are assumed constant.

Questions about this tool

How much does an EV usually use?

Many mid-size EVs use 14 to 22 kWh per 100 km, more at high speed and with air conditioning.

What if I use fast chargers?

Enter the average price you really pay; if half your charging is at home and half at public chargers, average the two.

What does a negative saving mean?

The petrol car is cheaper to fuel at the prices you entered, which happens when electricity is expensive and fuel is cheap.
