Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.
How to use it
- Enter fence length, post spacing (panel width) and rails per section.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Sections = fence length ÷ post spacing, rounded up. Posts = sections + 1. Rails = sections × rails per section.
Example
Inputs: Fence length = 30 m, Post spacing (panel width) = 2.4 m, Rails per section = 2. Result: Posts: 14; Panels or sections: 13; Rails: 26.
Limits and caveats
- For one straight run; for corners or gates, calculate each side separately and add gate posts.
- Does not include concrete, fixings or brackets.
Questions about this tool
Why is there one more post than panels?
Each panel needs a post at both ends and neighbors share posts, which leaves one extra post at the end of the run.
What post spacing is typical?
Ready-made timber panels are usually 1.8 or 2.4 m wide; wire mesh fences can go up to about 3 m.
How do I handle corners?
Work out each side on its own, then subtract one post per corner because both sides share the corner post.
