- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Reading ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words). Grade level = 0.39 × (words ÷ sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables ÷ words) − 15.59.
Example
Result: Flesch reading ease: 18.4; Rating: Very difficult; Flesch-Kincaid grade level: 12.4.
Limits and caveats
- English only; non-Latin words are ignored.
- Syllables are estimated from spelling rules and can be off for some words, so results may differ slightly from other tools.
Questions about this tool
Does this work for Arabic text?
No. Flesch’s constants were fitted to English text and rely on English syllables, and there is no equivalent Arabic formula applied here.
What is a good reading ease score?
A score of 60 to 70 is plain English that most readers follow. Higher scores mean easier text.
What does a grade level of 8 mean?
It means the text suits roughly a US 8th grade student. Very short, simple text can even give a negative grade.
