Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.
How to use it
- Enter text and paragraph separator.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
A paragraph is a non-empty block of text. In blank-line mode one or more empty lines separate paragraphs; in line mode each non-empty line is a paragraph. Average = words ÷ paragraphs.
Example
Inputs: Paragraph separator = Blank line. Result: Paragraphs: 2; Sentences: 4; Words: 24.
Limits and caveats
- Text copied from a web page may lose its blank lines, so paragraphs merge into one.
- Short headings count as paragraphs when they sit on their own line.
Questions about this tool
Which mode should I use?
Use blank line if you leave an empty line between paragraphs. Use every line break if each line is its own paragraph, as in Word.
Do several empty lines add paragraphs?
No. Any run of empty lines counts as one separator and adds no paragraph.
How many words should a paragraph have?
It depends on the kind of writing, and shorter paragraphs read more easily on screens. Use the average to compare with what your teacher or editor asks for.
