How it is calculated
Speaking time in minutes = words ÷ speaking pace (words per minute). Seconds = round(words × 60 ÷ pace).

Limits and caveats
- The default of 130 words per minute is an estimate for a calm delivery; real pace varies by speaker.
- Pauses, applause and audience questions are not included.
Questions about this tool
How many words do I need for a 5 minute speech?
At 130 words per minute you need about 650 words. Multiply the minutes by your own pace to get your target.
What pace suits a voice-over?
Adverts are usually read faster than speeches, while teaching content is slower. Record one minute of yourself and count the words to learn your real pace.
Why did my talk run longer than estimated?
Pauses, slide changes and ad-libbing add time, so leave a margin of a minute or two.
