How to use it

  1. Enter tank size, gauge level, fuel consumption and reserve to keep.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Fuel left = tank size × gauge % ÷ 100. Usable fuel = fuel left − reserve. Range (km) = usable fuel × 100 ÷ consumption.

Example

Inputs: Tank size = 60 L, Gauge level = 50 %, Fuel consumption = 8 L/100 km, Reserve to keep = 0 L. Result: Driving range: 375 km; Range in miles: 233 mi; Usable fuel: 30 L.

Limits and caveats

  • Many fuel gauges are not linear, so half on the gauge is not always exactly half a tank.
  • Consumption rises with high speed, climbs and air conditioning, so keep a margin.

Questions about this tool

How much reserve should I keep?

Many drivers keep enough for at least 50 km, about 4 liters for a car using 8 L/100 km.

Where do I find tank size?

In the owner's manual or spec sheet; small and mid-size cars usually hold 45 to 80 liters.

Why does it differ from the dashboard range?

The dashboard bases range on your recent consumption, so it shifts quickly with driving style.
