How to use it

  1. Enter amount, measure, measuring spoons, brand and your own weighed teaspoon in grams (optional).
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

grams = spoons × weight per spoon for the brand. From each label: Diamond Crystal serving 1/4 tsp = 0.7 g, so 2.8 g per teaspoon; Morton serving 1/4 tsp = 1.2 g, so 4.8 g. A tablespoon is 3 teaspoons. Sodium = grams × 393.37 mg, the sodium share of pure sodium chloride. For metric spoons the weight is multiplied by the volume ratio: 5 ÷ 4.929 for a teaspoon and 15 ÷ 14.787 for a tablespoon, about 1.4% more.

Example

Inputs: Amount = 2, Measure = Teaspoon, Measuring spoons = US spoons (as in the source), Brand = Diamond Crystal. Result: Weight in grams: 5.6 g; Grams per teaspoon used: 2.8 g; Sodium in this amount: 2,203 mg.

Limits and caveats

  • Weights come from each Nutrition Facts label (serving 1/4 tsp) times 4 and can change if the maker updates the label.
  • Sodium assumes pure sodium chloride, which is 39.34% sodium.
  • Figures are for a spoon leveled with a knife; a heaped spoon weighs clearly more.

Questions about this tool

Why not swap Morton for Diamond Crystal spoon for spoon?

Morton weighs 4.8 g per teaspoon and Diamond Crystal 2.8 g per their labels, so a spoon-for-spoon swap makes the dish about 71% saltier.

How much kosher salt equals a teaspoon of table salt?

By weight, a teaspoon of table salt is 6 g in USDA data, equal to about 2.14 teaspoons of Diamond Crystal or 1.25 teaspoons of Morton.

Does it change with metric measuring spoons?

Slightly. The figures are for US spoons (4.93 mL and 14.79 mL); metric spoons of 5 mL and 15 mL hold about 1.4% more, so pick "Metric spoons" to adjust.
