How to use it

  1. Enter room length, room width, pack coverage, waste allowance, total door width and skirting piece length.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Packs = length × width × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ pack coverage, rounded up. Skirting pieces = (2 × (length + width) − door widths) ÷ piece length, rounded up.

Example

Inputs: Room length = 5 m, Room width = 4 m, Pack coverage = 2.2 m², Waste allowance = 10 %, Total door width = 0.9 m. Result: Packs needed: 10; Floor area: 20 m²; Area covered by the packs: 22 m².

Limits and caveats

  • Assumes a rectangular room; split an L-shaped room into two rectangles and add the results.
  • Herringbone laying needs 15% waste or more.

Questions about this tool

How many packs for a 5 × 4 m room?

The floor is 20 m². With 10% waste and 2.2 m² per pack you need 10 packs.

Where do I find the pack coverage?

It is printed on the pack in square metres, usually 1.5 to 2.5 m² depending on plank size and count.

Do I need skirting across doorways?

No, which is why the door width is taken off the perimeter before counting pieces.
