How to use it

  1. Enter number of boxes, box length, box width, box height, approximate furniture volume and load efficiency.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Box volume = length × width × height ÷ 1,000,000 (m³). Load = boxes × box volume + furniture volume. Required capacity = load ÷ (load efficiency ÷ 100).

Example

Inputs: Number of boxes = 40, Box length = 50 cm, Box width = 40 cm, Box height = 40 cm, Approximate furniture volume = 10 m³. Result: Truck capacity needed: 16.5 m³; Capacity needed in cubic feet: 583 ft³; Total load volume: 13.2 m³.

Limits and caveats

  • Furniture volume is your estimate, and gaps between items depend on how well the truck is packed.
  • Truck and container capacities vary by company, so compare with the stated internal volume.

Questions about this tool

What is load efficiency?

It is the share of the truck you can really fill, since irregular furniture leaves gaps. 75% to 85% is common for household moves.

How do I estimate furniture volume?

Multiply each item's length, width and height in meters and add them up. A 2 × 0.9 × 0.8 m sofa is 1.44 m³.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic meter?

About 35.31, because one cubic foot is exactly 0.028316846592 m³.
