How it is calculated

cups = grams ÷ 81 g per US cup (236.59 mL) for the first type. With a 250 mL metric cup divide by 85.59 g. The leftover part of a cup is shown in tablespoons (16 per US cup, 15 mL each in metric), rounded to the nearest half spoon.

Example

Inputs: Weight = 40 g, Cup standard = US cup (236.6 mL), Oat type = Rolled or quick oats (flakes). Result: Cups: 0.49; In cups and spoons: 0 cups + 8 tbsp; Volume in millilitres: 117 mL.

Limits and caveats

  • The flakes figure is the USDA 81 g per cup; thick jumbo flakes may weigh more or less.
  • How you fill the cup changes the weight: spoon it in and level it without packing, or weigh your cup once and enter the figure in the optional box.
  • USDA figures are rounded to the whole gram per cup, and grain size, variety and moisture make your real weight a little higher or lower.
