How to use it

  1. Enter item price, your income, income is, work hours per week and work days per week.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Hourly pay = yearly income ÷ (weekly hours × 52), where yearly = monthly × 12 or weekly × 52. Work hours = price ÷ hourly pay. Work days = hours ÷ (weekly hours ÷ days per week).

Example

Inputs: Item price = 3,000, Your income = 12,000, Income is = Per month, Work hours per week = 40, Work days per week = 5. Result: Work hours needed: 43.3 hours; Work days needed: 5.4 days; Your hourly pay: 69.23.

Limits and caveats

  • It uses the income you enter; use take-home pay for a truer picture.
  • It assumes 52 working weeks a year and does not remove leave.

Questions about this tool

Should I enter gross or take-home pay?

Take-home pay is more accurate, since it is what you actually spend from.

How is hourly pay worked out from a monthly salary?

The salary is multiplied by 12 and divided by weekly hours times 52, so 12,000 a month on 40 hours is about 69.23 an hour.

Why think of prices in work hours?

Hours tie the price to your real effort, which makes it easier to judge if a purchase is worth it.
