How to use it

  1. Enter phrases (one per line), skip small words (of, and, the, في, من, و), ignore the arabic article ال and dot after each letter (w.h.o.).
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

The phrase is split into words at spaces and hyphens; the first letter or digit of each word is taken and upper-cased. The Arabic article ال can be dropped from the start of a word before taking its letter.

Example

Inputs: Skip small words (of, and, the, في, من, و) = yes, Ignore the Arabic article ال = yes, Dot after each letter (W.H.O.) = no. Result: Acronym: NATO ASAP مصع; Phrases: 3.

Limits and caveats

  • Official acronyms do not always follow one rule; some take two letters from a word or change the order.
  • Arabic acronyms are far less common than English ones, so review the result before using it.

Questions about this tool

Why is there no letter for of or in?

Skip small words is on. Turn it off to include every word in the acronym.

How are Arabic words starting with ال handled?

With the option on, ال is dropped first, so الصحة gives ص instead of ا.

Do hyphens split words?

Yes. A compound like self-contained gives two letters, S and C.
