Character counter with and without spaces
Paste text to see how many characters it has as a reader sees them: an Arabic letter with its diacritic counts once, and a compound emoji counts as one symbol.

How to use it
- Enter text.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
The text is split into user-perceived characters (grapheme clusters) per Unicode UAX #29. With spaces = every character including spaces and line breaks; without spaces = characters that are not whitespace. Bytes = length of the text encoded as UTF-8.
Example
Result: Characters with spaces: 28; Characters without spaces: 24; Letters: 19.
Limits and caveats
- Each line break counts as one character in the with-spaces total.
- Some platforms count UTF-16 units, so an emoji can show there as 2 or more characters.
Questions about this tool
Do Arabic diacritics count as separate characters?
No. A fatha, damma or shadda attaches to its letter and counts with it as one character, though it adds to the byte size.
Why does the count differ from X or SMS?
Each platform has its own rule: X gives some symbols double weight and SMS counts encoding units. Use the tweet or SMS counter for those cases.
Are line breaks counted?
Yes. Each line break is part of the with-spaces count and is left out of the without-spaces count.
