How it is calculated
grams = amount × unit size in US cups × 120. 1 tbsp = 1/16 cup, 1 tsp = 1/48 cup, metric cup 250 mL = 1.0567 US cups. 1 oz = 28.3495 g.
Example
Inputs: Amount = 0.5, Unit = US cup (236.6 mL). Result: Weight in grams: 60 g; Weight in ounces: 2.12 oz.
Limits and caveats
- Scooping the cup straight from the bag packs the flour and adds noticeable weight; the figure assumes spoon and level.
- Chart figures are rounded to the gram, and a scale is more exact than any cup.
- Metric cup (250 mL) and spoon values are scaled by volume from the 236.59 mL US cup figure.
Questions about this tool
How many grams is 1/2 cup of flour?
Half a US cup is 60 g, because a full cup is 120 g in the chart; a quarter cup is 30 g.
Is all-purpose flour the same as plain flour?
Yes, plain flour is the usual name for it outside the US, and the chart lists it at 120 g per cup.
Why do cup weights differ between websites?
Charts assume different ways of filling the cup. This tool uses the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart: 1 cup of all-purpose flour = 120 g, fluffed, spooned into the cup and leveled.
